She was born November 6, 1921 in Dayton, Pennsylvania to the late Charles A. Saxman and Bertha L. (Crawford) Saxman.
Jean was a 1939 graduate of Rural Valley High School, then went to Kittanning Business College. After business college, she graduated from the American Institute of Banking in Youngstown, Ohio. Jean worked as a bookkeeper and teller for Rural Valley National Bank in Rural Valley, PA. She was a commercial bookkeeper for Union Savings and Trust Company in Warren, Ohio. She also worked part-time at The Hub Men's Clothing Store in Butler for a number of years. Jean was a member of Butler Chapter #43, Order of the Eastern Star, the Blind Association of Butler and Armstrong Counties. She was also a life member of the Butler City Hunting and Fishing Club and Tanglewood Senior Center. Jean was a member of Summit Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Jean is survived by one daughter, Carole Rae Bertino and her husband Richard of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren, Domenick and Joseph Bertino; two great grandchildren, Tyler and Michael Bertino; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Bates, Sr., whom she married on August 24, 1946, and who passed away on November 18, 1985; one son, James A. Bates, Jr.; three brothers, Robert T. , Blair E. and Russell A. Saxman; and one sister, Olive M. Wilson.
Burial in the Summit Church Cemetery.
