He was born on May 15, 1940 in Salem, the son of the late Gustave Adolf and Mildred Jane (Moore) Bonfert.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was a 1959 graduate of Salem High School.
He was self-employed as an engineer and drafting specialist.
He is survived by his wife, the former Sandra L. "Judy" Gearin; his children, Janie Hamlin of Medina and Jillian Bingham of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; stepchildren Diana Vegila, Brian Cramer, Leigh Lyons and Scott Koffell, all of Salem; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem. A time of visitation will be held from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Monday.
Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery in Salem.
