DOUGLAS M. GARNER

Age 80, of Montrose, Colorado.

DEATH: Tuesday, February 29, 2016 at Sunrise Creek Nursing Home in Montrose.

BIRTH: February 14, 1936 in Norwood, Colorado, to Millard Golman Garner and Mary Hazel Hammond Garner. He spent his childhood in the Disappointment Valley, growing up as one of the last pioneers there.

GRADUATE: Norwood High School.

MILITARY: Joined the Navy in 1955, serving two years aboard the minesweeper USS Engage.

MARRIAGE: Maxine Aspaas on December 27, 1958.

EMPLOYMENT: Construction, mining and heavy equipment. Worked two years for the Department of Defense destroying chemical weapons on Johnston Atoll. Assistant Road Foreman for Montrose County in the Nucla District. Farmed and raised hay for over 13 years, before retiring to Arizona in 2006.

PASTIMES: Outdoors. Hunting, snowmobiling and 4-wheeling.

PRECEDED IN DEATH by father Millard Golman Garner, mother Mary Hazel Hammond Garner and sisters Eloise Nadine Garner and Mildred Eileen Williams.

AMONG SURVIVORS: Wife, Mary H. "Maxine" (Aspaas) Garner of the family home in Montrose, three sons Jim (Kristi) of Montrose, Mark (Terry) Garner of Seminole, Texas, and Max Garner of Anchorage, Alaska, a brother Roy Garner of Hotchkiss, Colorado, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the proud grandfather to seven grandchildren.

MEMORIAL SERVICE AND CELEBRATION OF LIFE: March 17, 2016, at 11 AM at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. A reception will follow at the United Methodist Church, 19 S. Park Street in Montrose.

INTERMENT AND GRAVESIDE SERVICES: March 17, 2016, at the Cedar Ridge (Nucla) Cemetery at 3:30 p.m.
