Father Mark Traenkle, SA

Fr. Mark was born John Traenkle on September 1, 1929 in Irvington, NJ. He graduated from St. Peter Parochial School and Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Newark, NJ. After completing High School in 1947, he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement at Graymoor, NY in September, 1947. He received the habit in 1949 and took the religious name Mark. After making his first vows in 1950, he attended Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, where he earned a BA in philosophy in 1952. He then studied at the Gregorian University in Rome, where he earned a Licentiate Degree in Sacred Theology in 1956. He was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood by Cardinal Traglia on April 2, 1956 in the church of Sant'Onofrio, Rome. After ordination, Fr. Mark taught Science and Mathematics at St. John's Atonement Seminary, Montour Falls, NY until 1969. He then spent over thirty years in parish ministry. He did pastoral ministry in British Columbia, Texas, North Carolina, and New York State. Then he retired from full time active ministry and spent the last part of his life at Holy Name Community, Ringwood, NJ, a nursing facility for elderly and/or infirmed religious brothers and priests.

John Traenkle was born on September i. 19?9 in
Irving, NJ, son of John Traenkle and Frances Seeger Traenkle.
John was one of three siblings, having a sister and a brother.
John received the sacrament of Baptism at St. Peter's Church.
Newark, NJ on September 3. 1930. His elementary education
took place at St. Peter's School in Newark and high school at
Our Lady of Good Counsel. also in Newark.

John entered St. John's Atonement Seminary at
Graymoor in September, 1947. ln July 1949 he entered the
novitiate at St Joseph's Friary, Saranac Lake, N.Y. receiving
the Franciscan habit and the name of Mark. In July, 1950
Frater Mark pronounced first vows and in the fall began iris
studies at Atonement Seminary, Washington, D.C. in
Washington he studied at the Catholic University where he

received a degree in Philosophy. In the fall of 1952 he was assigned to S. Onofrio in Rome with
studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University where he earned the degree of S.T.L. While in
Rome Mark pronounced his final vows in September, 1953. In 1956 Mark was ordained to the
priesthood in Rome at the historic Franciscan Church of St. Isidore staffed by the Irish Province
of Friars Minor. Fr. Mark celebrated his first Mass in the Church of S. Onofrio staffed by the
Atonement Friars, on April 3" 1956.

Upon returning to the United States, Fr. Mark was assigned to the Minor Seminary,
Montour Falls, N.Y. where he remained for thirteen years as teacher and assistant Prefect. For
a number of years he was assigned to various parishes in the Nelson Diocese in British
Columbia, Canada. The Canadian experience was followed bv parochial ministry in Hereford.
Texas and High Point. N.C. He also ministered at St. Joseph's Friary, Saranac Lake, however
when winter arrived in Saranac Mark would move to our friary in Clearwater, Florida, returning
to Saranac in the summer. While he was in Florida he did a wonderful job in taking care of the
lawns, flowers and shrubbery on the property. In his final years at Graymoor. Fr. Mark. due to
health reasons. had to take up residence with the Holy Name Community, Ringwood, N.J. where

he went home to God on October 16. 2006.

A Wake Service took place with the Holy Name Community prior to the Mass of
Christian Burial at Graymoor on October 19.2006. Interment followed in the Friars' Cemetery, Graymoor.

Traenkle, Gertrude P. "Trudy" LATHAM Gertrude "Trudy" P. Traenkle, 89, of Latham passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at the Grand Rehabilitation & Nursing at Guilderland. Born on February 22, 1928, in Irvington, N.J., Trudy was the daughter of the late John and Frances (Seeger) Traenkle. She proudly served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957. Trudy was an assistant scientist with Hoffman & LaRoche in Nutley, N.J. for 27 years before retiring in 1986. She was a former parishioner at St. Mary's Parish in Nutley and currently a parishioner at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Latham. Trudy is survived by her loving niece, Dr. Diane Traenkle of Michigan; and her four great-nieces, one great-nephew and many friends. She was predeceased by her brothers, Walter J. Traenkle and Mark Traenkle. In keeping with Trudy's wishes there will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 8, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet- Shaker Road, Latham, with Father Geoffrey Burke officiating. Interment with military honors will take place in the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Trudy's memory to a local hospice agency of your choice.
