William Amittia (Mitt) Graves was born about 1821 in Newton, Wilkes County, Georgia to Robert Charles Graves and Margaret "Peggy" Mackey Graves. His grandparents were James and Sarah Graves. The 1850 Census in Talladega County,Alabama lists William and his wife, Missouri Christopher Caroline, along with their first five children born in Alabama; Stephen, Amanda, William, Margaret and John. The family moved to Hunt County, Texas about 1854 along with his brother, Robert B. Graves. They later followed Robert to Erath County, Texas in 1859. The 1870 Census shows the family on Paloty Creek, Erath County,Texas; William, Caroline, Wm. Dixon, John Marion, J Milford, James C and Sarah C.

The family homesteaded on Richardson Creek about five miles west of Bluff Dale, Texas. Abstracts for land purchased by William can be found in the Texas General Land Office for Erath County. William passed away on Oct. 21, 1878 and was buried in the Graves family cemetery on the ranch where many of the family were buried. The ranch was referred to as the Triangle Ranch, however; it was later sold and became known as the Three Circle Ranch. A bulldozer was later used to clear some of the property with the driver unaware of the cemetery. Many of the headstones were accidently pushed over the bluff of the creek bed.
