Catherine M. Dinsmore, 86, a longtime bookkeeper and library assistant who enjoyed skiing and family gatherings, died Tuesday at a Falmouth nursing home. She lived on Crestwood Road in Cumberland Center since 1960.

Miss Dinsmore worked 44 years as a bookkeeper for Central Maine Power Co. She started there in 1929, when she was about to graduate from high school. CMP was then known as the Cumberland County Power & Light Co., and its general offices were at 443 Congress St.

''It was at a time when not a lot of women were out there working, either,'' said her niece Susan Waite.

Miss Dinsmore retired from CMP in 1971 and went to work as a library assistant at Prince Memorial Library here. During that time, she took college courses in library science.

She was drawn back to bookkeeping when a neighbor started a business, TEM Co., a tool and die manufacturer in Gorham. ''She helped set up the bookkeeping system, and she stayed on,'' said her niece. She did all the bookkeeping and was the office manager. That was her third career.''

Eventually Miss Dinsmore wanted to retire again, and her neighbor Margaret Jean Taylor took over her job.

''She set up a very fine bookkeeping system which we still use today,'' said Taylor.

Friends and relatives describe Miss Dinsmore as an independent woman. When she was young, she enjoyed skiing.

''She was a downhill skier when very few people were,'' said her niece Connie Dinsmore. ''She used to ride the ski train from Portland to North Conway.

Miss Dinsmore continued to downhill ski throughout the 1940s, but later she switched to cross-country.

''She enjoyed cross-country skiing at Sugarloaf and various parts of Maine,'' said Connie Dinsmore. ''She did that right up until 10 years ago.''

''She had snowshoes, and she'd go out into the woods and feed the birds,'' said Waite. ''She worked hard and lived very frugally. She baked her own bread, and she enjoyed heating with wood and making popcorn over the wood fire.''

Miss Dinsmore enjoyed her family, and she was usually the one to arrange and host the family holiday gatherings. Whenever she traveled, it was to visit relatives.

Several years ago, after retiring for the last time, she volunteered at the Greely High School library.

Born in South Portland, a daughter of Lucien S. and Etta Mae Lowe Dinsmore, she was a graduate of South Portland High School. She was a member of the Tuttle Road United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Kenneth Dinsmore of Port Charlotte, Fla., and several other nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hobbs Funeral Home in South Portland. The Rev. Mark Monson Alley will officiate. Burial will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.
