Allen Zach White was born in Richmond, KY, pioneer African American musician and businessman. Following his service as a solider in World War I, while a student at Wilberforce College, he joined Horace Henderson’s student band, playing banjo. By 1923, he’d changed his name to Zack Whyte and formed his own band, the Chocolate Beau Brummels. While the band was based in Cincinnati, members included at various times such respected musicians as trumpeters Sy Oliver and Roy Eldridge, trombonist Vic Dickenson, and tenor saxophonist Al Sears. Through the 1920s and 1930s, the Chocolate Beau Brummels traveled the country as a very successful jazz band with recordings that included Good Feelin' Blues, It's Tight Like That, and Mandy. The band recorded fewer than a dozen sides, all in the Richmond, Indiana studios of the Gennett, Supertone, and Champion labels in 1929. Some of the records were originally issued under the names Eddie Walker and His Band, and Smoke Jackson and His Red Onions.
But it was in Cincinnati where White had his greatest impact as a black pioneer. During the early 1930s he became nationally known as a band leader in part because of his program with the band on WLW—this was a first for black bands.
He later became the first African American salesman for a major brewer, working for Burger Beer in Cincinnati.
Following his retirement from Burger, he ran a pleasure resort, Zac-Mar Pines (named after himself and his wife) in Bayshore, Michigan and a resort hotel in Charlexoix, Michigan.
