In his early years, Thomas worked at Lightning Express Trucking and was a member of the Teamsters. He later was the owner and operator of Alfano's BP Gas Station. Most recently, he had driven the ACTS Bus. Thomas also served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. A devoted member of St. Vitus Church, he belonged to the Holy Name Society and was named Man of the Year. Thomas was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus Council 512, receiving his fourth degree and serving as a past Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, District Deputy, and PA State Treasurer.
In addition to his wife, Thomas is survived by his children, Jerry Alfano and wife Patty of New Castle, Diane Sajewski and husband Bill of Mercer, PA, and Janice Shoup of New Castle; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Concetta (Dolly) Melcer and Angeline DiCarlo; brother, Nicholas Alfano; son-in-law, Douglas Shoup; and grandson, Andrew Sajewski.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military rites Friday at 9:15am at the funeral home. A procession will leave the funeral home Friday at 9:30am to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Vitus Church.
Interment will take place in St. Vitus Cemetery.
