Nathan Josiah “Butterscotch” Phelps, 8 years old, was called home by the Heavenly Angels due to a sudden illness of influenza on February 24, 2016.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at Greater Powerhouse Church of God in Christ 428 North Woodland Avenue, Michigan City, with Elder Dwayne Hurt officiating. Burial to follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church until the time of service.

Nathan Josiah Phelps was born December 11, 2007, in La Porte, Indiana, to Marcus Phelps and Dreanna (Hurt) Curry.

He was a member of New Covenant Outreach Ministries under the leadership of his grandfather Elder Dwayne Hurt. Nathan was a junior deacon at the church. Nathan was in the second grade at St. John Luthern school. He loved basketball, baseball, football, video games and reading books.

Nathan leaves to mourn his parents Dreanna (Trey) Hurt-Curry, Michigan City, Indiana; one brother Carter Curry, Michigan City, Indiana; godparents Carol (Dan) Bigg; grandparents Elder Dwayne (Dedra) Hurt, La Porte, Indiana, Mindi Phelps, La Porte, Indiana, Wyddel Armstrong, Jr., Wisconsin, Derrick Miller, Lafayette, Indiana, Tonya Curry, Indianapolis, Indiana; great-grandparents Bishop Robert Hurt Sr., Michigan City, Indiana, Elaine DeBerry, Grambling, Louisiana, Sandra Phelps, La Porte, Indiana, Jim Phelps, Manuel Curry, LaPorte, Indiana, Alice Pryor, Gary, Indiana, and Wyddel (Rose) Armstrong Sr., Michigan City, Indiana; aunts ReShawn Hurt, Omaha, Nebraska, ShaVonte Hurt and Regina Hurt both of Grambling, Louisana, Domonique Hurt, La Porte, Indiana, Janell Collins, Chicago, Illinois, Victoria Armstrong of Michigan City; uncles, Arthur Hurt, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Jordan Pyles, Denver, Colorado, Shawn Armstrong, Michigan City, Indiana; special uncle Shawn Ulmer and special aunt Michelle Mitchell; and a host of relatives and friends.

Nathan was preceded in death by his father Marcus Phelps; and great-grandmother Magdalene Hurt.
