Raymond Shipley, 82, a resident of Henryetta, died Friday, August 10 in Wewoka. He was born on August 19, 1918 in Scipio, OK to Oliver B. and Ethel Schuller Shipley. He attended the Tannehill School and later attended high school in Indianola, but his education was cut short when he was needed at home for farm work and support the growing family. He later went to work for Verg Wettle at his grocery store in McAlester. He then worked for Safeway Stores in New Mexico and California. He worked for Consolidated Aircraft as a lead man on a bomber assembly line in Fort Worth, Texas and New Orleans, La., before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He was a gunners mate on the USS St. Louis and was injured in battle for which he was awarded the Purple Heart and various other medals. He also worked for companies in Redwood City, Calif., and Lafayette, Calif. He was married to Eceneith (Skip) Lang in 1960 and they operated Shipley's Pool Service in Lafayette and Forestville, Calif. until 1987 when he retired and they moved back to Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and a younger brother who was killed at Luzon during the war. Survivors include his wife of 40 years; sons, Roger and wife Julie, Jerry and Douglas of California and Jim of Nebraska; daughters, Connie and husband Richard of California and Peggy of Nebraska; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Byrd, Reva Mott, Leotis and husband Roy Sanders and Geneva and husband T. C. Key, all of Fort Worth, Texas; a brother, Paul and wife Lois of California and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 16 at the Tannyhill Cemetery in Tannyhill, near McAlester, under direction of the Rogers Funeral Home of Henryetta. VFW Post 539 of Henryetta and VFW Post 1189 of Okmulgee will conduct Military Services.
