Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, William was not officially declared by the military as being dead until October 10, 1944, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

William served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17F "Son" #42-5221, 427th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Onondaga County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on October 20, 1942 in Syracuse, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the fabrication of metal products and also as Single, without dependents.

William was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was hit by German aircraft and crashed into the Baltic Sea, near Lolland, Denmark during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
