Sophia was born in Hartland, Vermont. When she was about 17, her family moved to the growing factory town of Lowell, Massachusetts, where Sophia and her 2 younger sisters went to work in the Suffolk Mill, one of the cotton mills.

While in Lowell, at age 28, Sophia met and married Daniel Pierce on May 5, 1847. He was born October 10, 1812, in North Yarmouth, Maine, to John and Sarah Pierce. He was a tailor by trade. They moved to Yarmouth, Maine, to be near his family, and they had a couple of years together before Daniel left for the California gold rush in 1849. She gave birth in Yarmouth on March 13, 1848, to her only child, George F. Pierce, who only lived a few short years. Sadly, Sophia's husband died or disappeared somewhere in California. So now she had no husband and no child. She had to have been a strong lady.

Sophia stayed in Yarmouth, helping and being helped by the Pierce family. She loved growing flowers and sent seeds to her sister, Louisa, when Louisa was living in the Aroostock area of Northern Maine, during the Civil War.

When she was 60, Sophia married for a second time, on September 2, 1878, to Charles Poor/Poore who was 69 years old. He was a "rigger', and they lived in Yarmouth, Maine. Sophia was his second wife, his first wife being Mary Elizabeth Lombard, by whom he had several children.

Sophia died age 67 years, and her husband died a year later. They did share a few short happy years together.
