Ronald “Ron” Arthur Benson was born on October 8, 1944 at St. John’s Hospital in Red Wing, to Clarence and Arleen (Berg) Benson. Ron grew up in Zumbrota and graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1963. Ron worked for Oil Watten from 1960 to 1963. He then started working for Speed Olson and Jerry Strandemo in 1963. On July 11, 1964 he married Judy Rieken. They made their home in Zumbrota and raised their family of three children. In 1969 Ron went to work for Fischer sand and aggregate, in 1986 they moved to Rosemount. Judy passed away due to cancer in 2001 and Ron retired shortly after in 2002. Ron lived in Rosemount for 17 years before returning to Zumbrota, and then moved to the St. Mary Care Center in Winsted, MN. Although Ron lived in many places like Rosemount, Milaca, and Parkers Prairie he always called Zumbrota home. Ron enjoyed woodworking, collecting Studebaker model cars, taking Sunday afternoon drives with Judy in their ’66 Studebaker champion.
Ron is survived by his daughters, Sheila LaVan of Parkers Prairie, Teresa (Jeff) Fossland of Milaca; son, Doug Benson (fiancé Lisa Krogstad) of Blaine; nine grandchildren, Dustin, Ben, Kyle, Blake, Brett, Brady, Brennan, Megan, Benton; and great-grand daughter, Mia; two nieces and a nephew.
Ron was preceded in death by his wife, Judy; his parents; a sister, Audrey Anderson; and nephew, Rick Hanson.
