Mrs. Engel was born April 2, 1917 in Haystown, Nebraska, to William and Metta (Glinsmann) Jakob. She began school in Haystown, NE and completed her education
in Big Sandy, MT.
She married Elmer F. Engel on March 7, 1943 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The couple made their home on a farm near Wood River and in later years resided at different farms in the Cairo, Wood River and Grand Island area.
Mildred worked at the Lutheran Hospital Thrift Shop, at the Drapery Den as a seamstress and later as a custodian for St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Mildred was active in 4-H and also served as a leader. She was member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church sewing Circle and a member of Anna Circle.
Mrs. Engel enjoyed quilting. Mildred had resided at Lebensraum and at Wedgewood.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law: Karen
(James) Schwieger of Homer, NE., and Ramona Weber of Omaha, NE., two sons and daughter-in-laws: Vernon (Judy) Engel of Grand Island, NE and Jerome (Ardath) Engel of Colorado Springs, CO., one sister and brother-in-law: Nola (Elmer)
Stelk and sister-in-law: Norma Jakob all of Grand Island. 9 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren.
Her husband, and a brother, Henry Jakob preceded her in death.
