Zana Helene Abele

Mason City – Zana Helene Abele, 85, of Mason City, died peacefully in her sleep, Sunday, February 28, 2016.

Zana was born in Mason City on November 14, 1930, the daughter of Dr. Helene K. Groff and Dr. Clifford Groff. Zana graduated from Mason City High School. She continued her education at Broadlawns Nursing School in Des Moines, Iowa, graduating as a registered nurse. After working in pediatrics in several hospitals, Zana left nursing to raise her four children.

Zana will be remembered by her family as a loving and caring mother, for her quick wit, interesting stories, delicious cooking, sensible advice, and her wonderful sense of humor. She found pleasure in completing the daily crossword puzzle, making beautiful crocheted items, quilts, and crafts for family and friends. In her later years she enjoyed the time she spent with friends at the Mason City Senior Activity Center; eating, meeting with her knitting group, and mastering picture puzzles.

Zana is survived by her four children, Donald Lange, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Tonna (Tony) Marroni of Anderson, SC, Patty (Jerry) Sellers of Mason City, John Lange of Jefferson City, MO; four grandchildren, Gabriel (Amy) Marroni of Anderson, SC, Britney Marroni of Anderson, SC, Jason (Krysta) Sellers of Bismarck, ND, Andrea (Tyler) Velzke of Morristown, MN; four great-grandchildren, Greta and Dale Velzke of Morristown, MN, Adam Marroni of Anderson, SC, and Ella Sellers of Bismarck, ND; step-children, Robert Abele of Nisland, SD, Beverly (Ronald) Kester of Greene, IA, Carol Faulkener of Britt, IA.

She was preceded in death by; parents, Dr. Helene K. Groff and Dr. Clifford Groff, her husband, Carl Abele, and brother, Dr. Irwin (Caroline) Groff; step-son Dean Abele.

According to Zana’s wishes, her body will be cremated. Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City is in charge of the arrangements. A private family service will be held at a later date.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Mason City Senior Activity Center, 326 4th St. N.E., Mason City, IA 50401 or Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd St SE, Mason City, IA 50401.
