Stephen T. Ramsey, long time resident of the Bow-Edison area passed away Friday, February 19, 2016 at Life Care Center of Skagit Valley. He was born August 16, 1945 in Mount Vernon to Phoebe and Martin Ramsey. He relocated with his parents to Morrow Bay, CA; Ocean Park, WA; Sequim, WA; Vancouver, BC; then back to Washington to Campy Kirby on Samish Island where his parents were caretakers. Stephen was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the 7th Cavalry in Germany during the Vietnam era, and enjoyed the notoriety of appearing in a full page picture in Look Magazine wearing his peace-sign embellished helmet driving his heavy tank. He worked for many years in the oyster industry primarily at Blau Oyster Co. on Samish Island. He especially enjoyed shucking oysters for the bus loads of oriental tourists who came to Blaus during the Tulip Festival each year. Stephen originated a Haunted Barn in the Edison community that entertained crowds each Halloween, the admissions of which greatly benefitted the Alger Food Bank for a number of years. He enjoyed playing the role of Santa Claus at the Christmas train of the Diz Schimke's on Colony Road. Stephen was a life-long modeler and participated in annual model shows and competitions, winning numerous prizes for his car models and dioramas. He was in on the beginning of the lawn mower racing "fever" of some years ago and raced for a number of summers at community events. He was also a car racing enthusiast who could frequently be seen Friday nights at the R.C. racing track and Saturdays at Skagit Speedway. Stephen is survived by his two sisters and their husbands, Priscilla and Arnold Torseth of La Conner, and Naomi and Milton Abbott of McKinleyville, CA; numerous nieces and nephews in California, Washington, New York and Maine; as well as many friends in the communities where he has lived. A graveside committal service will be held on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Stephen Ramsey Memorial Fund at any Skagit Bank branch.
