Nancy Jean (Gross) Short, 63, of Tulsa, OK, went to heaven on Friday, February 26, 2016 after a 16 month battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumor.

Nancy was born in Lebanon, Indiana on December 11, 1952, to John (deceased) and Helen Gross. She attended St. Malachy School in Brownsburg, Indiana, until 1964 when her family moved to Lafayette. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1971 and attended Purdue University where she met her husband, Michael, who survives. Nancy and Mike were married in Lafayette on December 16, 1972. They have two children, Matthew (Kristi) of Lafayette and Emily (Kencade) Babb of Cleveland, Ohio. Very special grandchildren are: Audrey, Lillian, Eliana and Evan Short and Cicely, Finnegan and Virginia Babb.

During the time she lived in Lafayette, Nancy was a pharmacy technician at Parkside Pharmacy and later CVS. She was an active member of Psi Iota Xi philanthropic sorority as well as a busy wife and mother. Nancy and Mike lived in Minneapolis, MN, briefly. While there Nancy volunteered at the Minneapolis Zoo and became proficient teaching children about Hissing Cockroaches, Hedgehogs and Skinks.

Nancy has lived the past 16 years in Tulsa, OK and has been an active member of the Church of the Resurrection. She was a preschool teacher for 2 and 3 year olds with the South Baptist Church’s Early Learning Program. Nancy was also a Docent Volunteer for the Philbrook Art Museum and enjoyed giving tours to school age children. Nancy enjoyed original and modern art and would spend hours studying prior to giving tours of new exhibits. She also volunteered at the Laura Dester House for foster children. She was an avid reader and belonged to a book club in Tulsa.

However, Nancy’s greatest love and joy was working with children. Her seven grandchildren were the highlight of her life and any spare time or money was spent on them. Nancy was a loving, caring, devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter to her family and friend to all. Nancy was a gifted listener and problem solver. Friends and strangers alike shared their stories with her. She always knew the solution to a situation or problem and happily shared it. Nancy was a teacher in all aspects of her life, so as she lays to rest, her presence will continue in the love and guidance she shared with her family and friends.

Nancy is also survived by her mother, Helen Gross, her sister Cathy (David) Banes and brother John (Charlene) Gross, all of Lafayette. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM on Saturday, until the time of the service at 3:00 PM at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Father Donald Gross will officiate. Nancy will be entombed at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens across from her father.
