Ernestine "Ernie" Phillips, resident of Castro Valley, passed away on September 1, 2001, surrounded by her loving family. Ernie had worked for many years at Eden Hospital in the Administrative office.

Ernestine Armida Heredia Martinez was born March 30, 1930 in Miami, Arizona. "Ernie" was the youngest of a loving family. Raised by her mother Rufigo "Ruth" Martinez and Grandmother Sara Heredia. Ernie married Richard W. Phillips on September 2, 1950 in Oakland, CA. They had one son whom they raised in Castro Valley. Ernie and Rich enjoyed time at their second home in Clearlake as well. Ernie, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as the family historian and one of the family event planners, was adored by all. In the 80s Ernie printed two cookbooks for her family that are cherished and used to this day; her delicious Mexican recipes and a collection of Family Favorites.

Ernie is survived by her loving husband Richard Phillips; one son and daughter-in-law; two grandchildren; two sisters; one sister-in-law; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her four brothers and their spouses, and brothers-in-law, Herman Shiman and James Finnegan. As noted in Ernie's family records, her biological and estranged father is Enrique Heredia. Ruth and Enrique met in Miami. Enrique is the nephew of Esequiel Heredia (Grandmother Sara's third husband).
