Viola 'Vi' Pearl Marshall

Viola "Vi" Pearl Marshall, 82, from Loves Park, passed away peacefully at St. Anthony Hospital on November 26th, after being surrounded and comforted by her family. Viola endured 50 various surgeries in her lifetime, but cancer took her in the end.

She was born November 1, 1932, in Leroy. She resided in Clinton, Rockford, Loves Park, Bloomington, and returned back home to Loves Park in 2013. She worked at National Lock, State and Madison Bowling Alley, Fairview Bowling Alley, Gray's IGA, and was a Home Care worker until she retired in 2013 at the age of 80.

Vi (or "Old Weird Vi", as she often referred to herself) never knew a stranger. She loved life and enjoyed every minute of it. She wrote a lifetime of poems, read voraciously, and loved doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her children, son, John (Pam) Short; son, Jamie (Ronda) Short, daughter, Joni "Bugg"(Donald) Hawkins and Rob Shelby; grandchildren, Cori (Jacy) Nilsen, Travis Hawkins, Ryan (Alicia) Hawkins, Christopher Short, Viola (Greg) Fisher, Jamie (Heather) Short Jr., 9 great-grandchildren, brother, Charles (Mary) Scott; several nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law, Maggie Wood; and special friends, Marie and Robert LaPour.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, John H. Short; her second husband, Gale Marshall; and her beloved dog, Thurston.

The family would like to thank Dr. Moses Tomacruz, Dr. Bharati Roy, and the medical staff of 4 West at St. Anthony Hospital for their care, compassion, and kindness.

Memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday, November 29th, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd., Machesney Park. Visitation 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Online condolences may be submitted at sunsetfhmemgardens.com
