Audrey H. Gunn-Armstrong, 74, of East Hartford, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family.

Daughter of the late Goldie and Rachel (Bowers) Gunn, Audrey was born in Gary, West Virginia and was the youngest of nine children in the Gunn Family.

In 1959 Audrey graduated from high school and moved to Philadelphia in search of new opportunities and adventure. Audrey was a strong, independent woman with a flair for fashion and a love of shopping. She was generous and loving, especially to her grandchildren and made the most of every opportunity in her life. Her hands-on approach to life allowed her to accomplish extraordinary things and learn lessons along the way. She never took the backseat and always enjoyed the ride. Audrey was fiercely intelligent and during her 43 years of employment with the Social Security Administration received numerous promotions and educational opportunities to advance her career. The celebration of her retirement in 2006 was trumped only by her announcement of her engagement to sweetheart, Ballard Armstrong. Her first and only marriage, this union though shortened by life's unfortunate circumstances was an enormous blessing to not only Audrey and Ballard but also to their families. She was a devoted and caring wife to Ballard until her final breath and will be forever cherished in his memory. Those also left to treasure her memory include her daughter, Valerie Johnson; three sisters, Lenora Edwards, Melba Butler, and Revella Blanks; three grandchildren, Deidra Gunn, Nichole Johnson, and Anthony Johnson; a great-granddaughter, Noor Slaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Her family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. at Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. Funeral services and burial will be held in Philadelphia, PA on Friday, March 4, 2016.
