Prior to retiring in 2000, he was a bricklayer for 50 years, working out of BAC Local Union No. 9.
He attended Mt. Hope Church of God in Bagdad, Allegheny Township, and was a life member of the Allegheny Township Volunteer Fire Department. His interests included woodworking and gardening.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lucy V. (Rua) Burns; two sons, Lewis A. Burns Jr., of Leechburg, and Eugene T. Burns (Barbara), of North Apollo; three daughters, Mrs. Alan (Margaret) Law, of Baton Rouge, La., Mrs. David (Shirley) Callaghan, of Allegheny Township, and Doreen F. Burns, of Kittanning; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dean Burns, of Allegheny Township; and two sisters, Leora Dyett, of Warren, Ohio, and Ruth Snyder, of Allegheny Township.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stillborn son; five brothers, Donald, Elmer B. "Al," Roy, Kenneth and Glenn Burns; and four sisters, Gertrude Bowser, Viola Metzler, Mary McCormick and Fay Sanford. Friends will be welcomed by his family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at CLAWSONS, Leechburg, where funeral ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Deborah Mentel officiating.
Interment following in Brookland Cemetery, Allegheny Township.
