Thelma spent her childhood in Jefferson Twp. near Oak Hill. She remembered the excitement when she had her first ride in a surrey with the fringe on top and recalled vividly the flu epidemic in 1918 when her whole family was ill.
At 17 years of age, she married William Masters. Bill owned a Model-T when they were married but had to sell it shortly after as the Depression was in full swing. They used a horse and buggy during their first year of marriage.
After marriage, Bill and Thelma moved to Normandy Orchard at Four Mile. They later purchased the land and orchard and lived there until Bill's death in 1976.
Thelma joined the Four Mile Christian Church on September 29, 1935, and continued as an active member until her move to Jackson after Bill's death. At that time she became a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
In 1980, Thelma married Clyde McCoy. Clyde died In 1996, after 16 years of marriage.
Thelma has two daughters who survive her: Wylda Masters Morey (Richard) of Pleasant Hill , MO and Wanda Masters Exline (Andy) of Chillicothe, OH. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Richard Morey (April) of Frisco, TX; William Morey (Darlene) of Friendswood, TX; Michael Morey (Sandi) of Leawood, KS; Jon Morey (Stephanie) of McKinney, TX; Sergeant Joseph Butts (Lheng), serving in Iraq; Jennifer Butts Wright of Cincinnati, OH and Jessica Butts Kidd (Herbie) of Independence , KY. She also leaves 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She also leaves two sisters, Helen Stemshorn of Jackson, OH and Phyllis Garrett of Bellflower, CA and one brother, Norman Ward (Hazel) of Lebanon, OH. Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services are under the auspices of Eisnaugle-Lewis Funeral Home in Jackson. Viewing will be held on Sunday, April 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. and funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 6 with Rev. Wendell Vermillion officiating.
The family has asked that memorials be made to Holzer Assisted Living where Thelma resided before her death or to the Grace Evangelical United Methodist Church in Jackson where Thelma was a member for 29 years.
