James Thomas Nichols, second son of Mr and Mrs David Nichols, was born Dec. 21, 1844, in Ross County, Ohio and departed this life Nov. 13, 1915, age 70 years 10 months and 23 days.
James T. Nichols was enrolled as a Sergeant under Capt Rodes of Co I, 149 Regiment of Ohio National Guards Volunteers on the 2nd day of May 1864, to serve one hundred days. Near the close of his service he was taken prisoner and kept at Danville and Libby prisons for 75 days. He was discharged from the service of the US on the 30th day of September 1864 at Cincinnati, Ohio.
He, in company with his mother, a brother and two sisters, came to Kansas in March 1869 and settled on a farm some 4 miles north of Topeka. After a stay of 1 year he moved to the present location where he and his brother, Ephriam Wesley Nichols (whose death occurred on Aug 16, 1915, less than 3 months ago), have lived together since.
On the eleventh day of Jan 1881, he was united in marriage to Alice M Latta, of Winfield, Iowa. To this union seven children were born, all of whom survive the deceased. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, Alice, and seven children: Nellie, Elizabeth, Earl, Morton, David, Ralph and Fannie plus two sisters. Mr Nichols was a member of the Methodist Church, having joined at Highland in 1879.
The funeral services were conducted from the Madison Chapel church at 2:00 pm Sunday by Rev R C Grose, of the Methodist church, of Osage City. The pall bearers were: J N Nicolay, O B Plyley, J F Brock, H N Hills, N Regenold, J E Smith.
