Son of Jacob Taylor of NC, who was born between 1765-1768 in Bertie Co., NC, Jacob William was the grandson of Lt. Col. William & Elizabeth (Anderson) Taylor, born 19Dec1737 Orange Co., VA d.05Nov1803 in NC Find A Grave Memorial# 68365334 & 99036266. William wintered at Valley Forge, his service was with the 6th North Carolina Regiment.

MILITARY SERVICE: Although the Continental Army had existed from 1775, the first regular standing was authorized by Congress in 1785. The War department was established in 1789. The US Army has continued to take part in all major wars between the War of 1812 and today. Jacob Taylor's first military enlistment commenced service 02 September 1813 under General David Blackshear's company, which was commanded by Captain Allen Tooke in the Volunteer Militia. His second enlistment began on 02 October 1813 at Dublin, Georgia for a term of 5 years or until the end of the war. The War of 1812 (1812-15) was a conflict between the United States and Great Britain. During this conflict, a more efficient US command was also beginning to be felt in the South. In March 1814, Gen. Andrew Jackson won an impressive victory over the British and their Indian allies at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in Alabama. Jacob served as a courier/spy during his term of service in the 8th Regiment of the United States Infantry, Georgia Volunteer Company commanded by Captain Farrar [Farrow] and was under command of Col. Twiggs. Jacob served 495 days. He was engaged in the Autassee Battle on the Tallapoosa River in Alabama and several other skirmishes while in this company. Remarks in Military Service File: D.R. Camp Flournoy Feb. 28 1815, and Certificate of Honorable Discharge. Jacob was discharged on Feb. 7, 1815 due to a general debility with full pay. He also saw service in the Army Calvary and served during the Indian Wars in Florida.

MARRIAGE: Sarah Higgs on 09 April 1818 in Tattnall County Georgia. The marriage license was issued by Judge Malcom Bree, Judge of the Inferior Court, Reidsville, Tattnall County, Georgia. A certified copy of the Marriage Record was made on 25 March 1881 by C. W. Smith, Court Ordinary for Sarah Higgs Taylor's application for Widow's of Veterans Pension Benefits. A copy of the marriage record was found in the National Archives, Pension File #WC31815. Sarah was born on 04 February 1800 in Montgomery County, Georgia, she was the daughter of Revolutionary Soldier John Higgs and his wife Elizabeth. In 1881 Sarah was described as being an invalid, blind and feeble, she passed away on 11 February 1890 in Lake City, Columbia County, Florida. Sarah had resided in the Mount Tabor Community of Columbia County Florida with her son John Gilbert Taylor.

Jacob drew 325 acres of land in the Tattnall Co., GA Land Lottery in 1827. Jacob moved to Jefferson Co. FL in 1828, then back to Lowndes CO., GA before the 1840 Census. Due to numerous safety concerns he moved to Dooly Co., GA by the 1850 Census. In 1852 he moved to Irwin Co., GA (this area is now in Wilcox Co., GA). Jacob joined the Primative New Hope Baptist Church. He passed away 14 OCT.1855 in Nashville, GA and was buried in the Old Nashville Cemetery.

-JOHN GILBERT, b. 09May1823 Tattnall Co., GA was a Missionary Baptist Preacher. He organized churches in Lownde, Berrien & Coffee Co., GA as well as in Columbia Co., FL. John was a noted Singing Sunday School Teacher. He baptised about 3,000 converts during his ministry. Married Martha Fletcher.
