Dave was the son of William Max Harkrider and Willie Mae Garrison. His parents divorced when he was a child and he lived with his mother and her parents - Joseph and Della Garrison.

Dave's education began with his B.A. at Rice, where his mother had also attended, and culminated with a PhD from California Institute of Technology. A student of Charlie Richter, he pursued a career as faculty and researcher at Brown and then was lured back to Caltech where he continued until he retired as emeritus in Geophysics at Caltech. He became an expert in seismological wave propagation and enjoyed working with staff, students, and faculty. A Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, Seismological Society of America board member, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, he also served as Associate Director of Caltech's Seismological Laboratory. His publications and class notes provide insight to solving scientific questions.

In the early 1950s he served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was married to Marilyn in 1964 and had a daughter and son, later divorced in 1972. He is survived by his second wife Sarah.

He loved his family, friends, and animals, always kind-hearted and a gentleman to those around him. Loved football, swimming, food, parties, jokes, and would enjoy a witty remark with a twinkle in his eye.

Dave is survived by his wife, son, daughter, 4 grandchildren, and many friends who will fondly remember him.

His ashes will be scattered near a camp in the Texas Hill Country where he spent happy summers as a teenager. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held later this year. Donations in his memory may be made to The Concord Orchestra, P.O. Box 381, Concord, MA 01742 (www.concordorchestra.com).
