James Olen Adkins, 72, passed away peacefully at his home in Evergreen on September 24, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 28, 1928 in Millard, Kentucky to Roland and Rosa Adkins.

He graduated from the eighth grade at Pine Creek and attended high school in Livingston. In 1945, he and his brother Neal drove over the Alcan Highway to Alaska where they worked for several months. In 1950, he married Charlene Dunlap in Livingston. Three girls were born into the family. The marriage later ended in divorce. In 1956, he moved to Thompson River where he worked as a logger. In 1958, he married Kaye Hinman. They soon moved to Missoula where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science at the University of Montana. Following graduation, he taught two years in Poplar. After moving to Kalispell, he worked at Stoltze Lumber until his retirement in 1993.

He and Kaye had five children. He loved his family very much and was always happy when they were together. In later years, he loved doing his own family history and helping others learn how to do theirs. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours working and enjoying the outdoors. He was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Rosa Adkins, one brother Neal, one sister, Madeline, one daughter, Pamela and one son, Michael.

He is now survived by his wife, Kaye, at the family home in Kalispell; six daughters, Gail Jaunke and husband Dave, and Toni Desjardin, all of Livingston, Tamara Adkins, and Shanon Adkins of Salt Lake City, Kimberly Stark and husband Gene of Kaysville, Utah, Nicole Yorgason and husband Tyler of Pleasant Grove; two sisters, Verna Adkins of Kalispell, and Marge Bothman of Libby; and two brothers, R.T. Adkins and wife Elaine of Kalispell and Barry Adkins and wife Arlene of Payson, Arizona; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
