James E. Cripps, age 66 of South Bend, passed away at 4:36 am Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Memorial Hospital. Jim was born April 3, 1949 in McMinnville, Tennessee to the late Charles S. and Mildred (Thurman) Cripps. Following graduation from high school, Jim was drafted into the US Army, where he served honorably in Germany during the Vietnam War. On September 27, 1975, he marred Shirley A. Waller in South Bend, Indiana. They recently celebrated 41 years of marriage. Shirley survives, along with their daughter, Samantha (Mark) Bondo of Durham, North Carolina. Jim is also survived by his siblings Leonard (Kathryn) Cripps of Oklahoma and Donna (Lester) Fortune of Michigan. There will be a celebration of Jim’s life from 5-7 pm Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the Chicory Café, 105 East Jefferson Boulevard, South Bend, Indiana 46601. Elkhart Cremation Service is assisting with arrangements. Jim was employed for many years as a supervisor at various restaurants in the Michiana area and was currently employed by Jaworski’s Meat Market in South Bend. Aside from his working life, he enjoyed cooking, hiking, fishing and family vacations with his daughter and son-in-law.
