Rocco V. D’Andrea was a lifelong Riverside resident who founded a leading engineering and surveying firm in town.
Born on Feb. 1, 1912, in a house on Apache Place in Riverside, Mr. D’Andrea was the son of the late Anthony and Philomena D’Andrea.
Mr. D’Andrea graduated from New York University in 1935 with a degree in civil engineering and until his retirement owned Rocco V. D’Andrea Inc., a surveying and engineering firm he started in 1947. The firm, now being led by one of his sons, remains involved in a majority of new construction in town.
Prior to starting his business, Mr. D’Andrea worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was working on the construction of new locks in the Panama Canal for two years before he was called to serve in World War II.
During the war, Mr. D’Andrea attained the rank of first lieutenant and served in Japan and the Philippines as a combat engineer. He received five combat ribbons and two U.S. Army commendations and assisted in the rebuilding of Japan after the war.
Mr. D’Andrea dedicated his professional life to the advancement of the surveying and engineering professions, his family said. In 1967, he co-founded the Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors and served as its president. He also served as president of the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers, and the Land Surveyors in Private Practice.
In 1988, Mr. D’Andrea was recognized as Surveyor General-North America by the New England section of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping for his contributions to the land surveying profession.
In Connecticut, Mr. D’Andrea was appointed in 1971 by Gov. Thomas Meskill for a five-year term on the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, representing both professions. And in 1979, Gov. Ella Grasso appointed Mr. D’Andrea as the first person to serve as chairman of the state Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. He stepped down from the position in 1995.
In Greenwich, Mr. D’Andrea was a member and past president of the Lions Club of Old Greenwich. He was an avid vegetable gardener and golfer, who once scored a hole-in-one and campaigned for improvements to the town’s public golf course.
