Died peacefully in Brooklyn on Friday morning, with his son by his side, after a brief illness.
Born to Lloyd Winter Stanton, Sr. and Maria del Refugio Garcia in Laredo, Texas, in 1927, Lloyd was raised in a large, extended family. He interrupted his studies at Laredo High School to enlist in the Navy at the age of seventeen, and served on a landing ship medium, sailing to occupied Japan; he was called up again for the Korean War, and served on a sub-tender, the U.S.S. Fulton, on which he attained the rank of machinist's mate, 2nd class. He attended Laredo Junior College, where he was a cheerleader, and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Lloyd's professional life included work with the Texas Department of Highways, where his photography was featured in maps and other publications, and over twenty-five years of service to the U.S. Government.
He met his wife to be, Billie Ward, at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where they had adjoining desks and shared a telephone. They were married in 1962. In 1969, they moved to Annandale, Virginia. Lloyd retired as a contract negotiator for the General Services Administration in 1987, and received several commendations for outstanding service. As a young man, Lloyd was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, motorcycling, and waterskiing (using a Model A as a tow vehicle); as a retiree he was an avid camper, and enjoyed genealogical research.
He spent the last months of his life in Brooklyn, living near his son, where he made many new friends. Lloyd was an exuberant, joyful, compassionate man who easily made friendships throughout his life, a devoted husband and heroic caregiver to his wife of over fifty years, and a loving father. His honest and free expression of his feelings, his dignity, his kindness, and his sense of humor made him delightful company, and his open, infectious smile, his easy laughter, his playful wit, and his gentle manner will be sorely missed by his many friends and loved ones. His wife predeceased him in 2013.

There will be a viewing at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Virginia, on Monday, February 29 at 11:30, and a graveside service at Quantico National Cemetery at 2PM.
