Arnold served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a photographer during the war and later for the Knickerbocker News/Times Union as a chief photographer. He became director of photography for Capital Newspapers until his retirement in 1991. He took many memorial photographs which appeared in various publications throughout the country. His photographs and paintings became his hobby after retirement. He also enjoyed his garden, making his nail plaques, rubber stamping and sitting in his favorite rocking chair.
