He was born in Muncie and graduated from Central High School, where he was a member of the track team and a student manager for the basketball team. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1947 and had specialty training in pediatrics at the New York Foundling Hospital, Cook County Hospital in Chicago and Highland Hospital in Oakland, Calif. He practiced pediatrics in Muncie and Hayward, Calif., before joining the Kaiser group.
Dr. Ball served in the medical corps of the U.S. Army in Germany from 1951 to 1953. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Marian Holowaty Ball; a son, Eric Ball, Longmont, Colo.; two daughters, Marcia Rhoades, Bellefonte, Pa., and Diane Safford, Whitaker, Calif., and two brothers, Philip Ball, Muncie, and James Ball, St. Louis. A brother, Edward Ball, died in 1992. Graveside services will be in Mill Valley.
