Harold Veach (aka Fox, Digger, Harold Jr., Dig) Garner Jr. 72, Monroe City, Mo., died Thursday, December 24, 2015 in his home surround by his family. He was born January 1, 1943 in St. Louis, Mo, to Harold Veach and Myrl Louise Cash Garner Sr.

Mr. Garner attended the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis before returning to his hometown, Monroe City, where he joined his father as a funeral director at the Garner Funeral Home and Chapel, which celebrated its 65th anniversary this past year. In the early years of his time as funeral director, Harold wore many hats, also acting as the county coroner and ambulance driver.

His involvement and dedication to the local community took many forms: He was a recipient of the John Field's Community Service Award, and was a member of the Monroe City Lions Club, Jaycees, Southside Bridge Club, and Mosswood Gold Course. Early in his career, he was also a volunteer firefighter for the Monroe City Fire Department. He could be found every morning at Peggy Sue's the Dugout, and Buckman's coffee groups where he was a friend to all and loved listening to everyone's stories and telling a few of his own whether or not they were true.

More than anything, Harold's love for his community shone through his work at the Garner Funeral Home and Chapel, where he worked tirelessly to help families and friends through the most difficult times of their lives. He never met a stranger, and would do everything in his power to help anyone who asked for it. He was beloved by many friends and neighbors, and nearly everyone he met has shared a happy memory with him.

His lifelong love of sports led Harold to be a passionate supporter of the Monroe City Panthers and Holy Rosary Trojans and during the fall, spring and summer, he watched his grandchildren on the Baseball/softball field, and there was nowhere he loved to be more on a Friday night than at the football field cheering on the team.

He is survived by his family, who recall Harold as a generous, loving, and dedicated father and husband. Survivors include the love of his life, his wife, of 51 years, Sue Studer Garner; two sons, Trey and Trent; two daughters, Sara and Katie; a Yorkie, Koko; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Gary Garner, Monroe City; and one brother-ini-law, Jim Studer and wife, Becky, Pittsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Don Garner; his mother and father-in-law, Cecil Studer and wife, Kathleen; and a brother-in-law, Mike Studer.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, at the Garner Funeral Chapel, Monroe Cit. Rev. Steve Goughnour and Fr. Mike Penn officiated. Burial was at the St. Jude Cemetery, Monroe City. Visitation was Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Active pallbearers were Austin Mudd, Zachary Garner, Tegan Garner, Tariq Garner, Chandler Mudd and Taylon Garner. Honorary pallbearers were all of Harold's friends and his very special grat-granddaughter, Malaina Garner.

Memorial have been suggested to the Monroe City Athletic Booster Club, Monroe City Christian Church or Monroe City Lions Club. Funeral arrangements weer under the direction of Garner Funeral Home and Chapel, Monroe City. Online condolences can be made at garnerfuneralchapel.com
