Richard Eugene Arehart, 81, of State Route 39, Lucas, died Friday morning October 29, 2004 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a short illness.

He was born January 4, 1923 in Lucas to George L. and Laura E. (Herring) Arehart, and was graduated from Lucas High School in 1940.

Richard was a WWII Army veteran, serving as Sergeant with the 637th Tank Battalion in the Pacific Theater.

A lifelong Lucas resident, Richard was Postmaster in Lucas for 30 years, retiring in 1979. He also served as Treasurer for the Lucas School District, retiring from that post in 1989. He later worked several years as a salesman with Morris Motors in Loundonville.

Richard was a member of Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, a charter member of Lucas Lions Club, Secretary-Treasurer of Lucas Memorial Park, Treasurer of Lucas FFA Alumni, Treasurer of the Malabar Farm Foundation, Secretary-Treasurer for the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association, and a member of The Ohio State University Extension Advisory Board.

For the past 26 years he sang with the Fun Center Chordsmen, and will be remembered not just for his love of singing, but for how he sought to improve society, and specifically the Lucas area, through community service.

He is survived by his wife Martha I. (Griebling) Arehart, whom he married June 21, 1947; his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Margaret Arehart of Lexington; sisters-in-law Margery Scott and Helen Griebling both of Mansfield; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

An infant sister Margaret Arehart preceded him in death.
