Ms. Velma "Cookie" Grace Wade, Goldsboro, was born Jan. 30, 1970, in Snow Hill to the late Mr. Pordis Wade Sr. and the late Mrs. Thelma Grace Waters-Wade. She died May 23, 2012.
She attended Goldsboro City Schools, and graduated with the class of 1988.
At an early age she accepted Jesus as her personal Lord and savior, and continued that journey in her adult years. She always reminded many people that "holiness is right."
Cookie joined Johnson Chapel United Holy Church in 1986 under the leadership of the late Dr. Samuel L. Johnson, and continued on as a member under the leadership of elder Dexter Stevens and elder Derrick Oates.
She was appointed as the praise and worship leader, and was known to stir up any church service with her favorite song, "He Deliver Praise the Lord."
She had a very distinctive voice and could reach any top keys on the piano. Cookie was known for singing solos for many different churches, groups and organizations. She sang top soprano in her family group, The Wade Sisters, of Goldsboro.
Velma really loved her dialysis family at Davita South and JAS.
She loved to cook and invite you to eat, and would watch or call you and ask "how was it?"
Cookie was a people person, and if you didn't know her, you would by the end of her conversations, she met no strangers. You could talk to her about anything, but if it wasn't right, she would kindly let you know. She loved everybody no matter what color, creed or nationality -- big, tall, short, fat or skinny.
She was proceeded in death by a sister, Mary Madageline Wade-Griffin; two brothers, Milton R. Wade and Daniel L. Wade; paternal grandparents, John (Calena Rowe) Wade; and maternal grandparents, William (Jessie Mae Kennedy) Waters.
She leaves to cherish her everlasting memories her graduating 2012 Goldsboro High School scholar and very dedicated and devoted daughter, Zsanequia Ni'chelle McCullough of the home; four sisters, Vanessa (Willie) Thomas, Patricia (Fredrick) Steele, Lisa Wade and Portia (Felix) Acevedo all of Goldsboro; two brothers, Pordis (Michelle) Wade Jr. and Christopher (Darlene) Wade; a sister-in-law, Dalphine Wade of Goldsboro; a brother-in-law, Carlos Griffin of Goldsboro; a godbrother; a godson/nephew she loved so dearly, Bless'd B-yon "Yunnie" Acevedo; 10 nieces; 18 nephews; nine great-nieces; five great-nephews; two dedicated and loyal musicians, whom she called them as her babies, keyboardist Andrew Truzy and drummer/cousin Arnold Thornton Jr.; her godparents, mother Helen Johnson "Ma Helen" and apostle Lawrence and Coretha Bogier; her caregiver and CNA, Attilah Dunn; four close friends, Jokita Wright, Pamela Battle, Belinda Ashby and Tisha Eason; and her hairstylist and friend, Shalita Sanders.
Cookie loved all of her aunts and uncles, but in her last years became very attached to her aunt/sister, caregiver, prayer partner and confidant, sister Janice (Arnold) Thornton; her uncle, the Rev. William (Ernestine) Waters of Goldsboro; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, friend and godsiblings.
A visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tabernacle of Prayer, LBJ Building, 1005 S. John St., Goldsboro.
A memorial concert will be held immediately following the visitation from 7 to 9 p.m.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Bear Creek Headquarters Association building, 1800 S. Slocumb St. Following the services in the sanctuary, Ms. Wade's delicate temple, along with her adored family, will be escorted by E.M. Matthews' angelic white fleet to Old Mill Cemetery for interment rites.
