Norman was born on May 27, 1932, in Atlanta, Georgia to James D. Thornton and Lucille (Wesley) Thornton. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church where he was active with the Knights of Columbus. Norman was a United States Marine and served in the Korean war where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He loved to hunt and fish and be active in the Marine Corp League. After serving in the Marines, Norman retired from Greyhound after 27 years of employment.
He is preceded in death by his wife of more than 57 years, JoAnn Thornton; a daughter, Kathleen Thornton; his parents and two sisters.
Survivors include his children, Charles Thornton and his spouse David Siegel of Austin, Khristi Polk of Georgetown, and Norma Jo Thornton and Stephen Howe of Weir; a brother, Wesley Thornton and wife Ann Thornton Sylvester; grandchildren, Charles and James Polk, Amanda, Sarah and Daniel Lins and Nicholas Howe; his adopted family known collectively as the Langowski children and numerous nieces and nephews.
