Howard Lyman Gifford, 91, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at South County Hospital in South Kingstown, RI. For 27 memorable years, he was married to Doris (Anderson) Gifford of Narragansett, RI. He was born November 22, 1924 in Providence, RI to the late Richard L. and May (Gorst) Gifford.

He Graduated from New England Tech and started a career at Hussmann Corporation specializing in sales of commercial refrigeration and later became branch manager first in Glastonbury, CT then Salem, NH.

Mr. Gifford was proud to serve his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the USS Shubrick (DD-639) during Operation Overlord, which had escorted the USS Nevada and helped aid in the bombing of German posts between Utah and Omaha beaches on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

Again on the USS Shubrick, she escorted the USS Mississippi from Pearl Harbor to Okinawa and was attacked on May 29, 1945 by two kamikaze aircraft one of which hit the Shubrick starboard side, detonating its 500 lb. bomb and a depth charge. Mr. Gifford would have been in that part of the ship and most likely killed if it weren't for his commanding officer ordering him to move out.

Besides his brave heroism and patriotism, Mr. Gifford was a special man who gave his family all his attention and made so many memories with them. For 27 straight years, he and his wife Doris would travel to Ft. Myers for the winter months. Besides the Florida road trips, they went on an adventure for three spectacular months, traveling along the North West, down the California Coastline and returned through the South West states.
When not traveling, he enjoyed playing golf with friends and boccie with his family and visiting any New England coastal water way to either walk along the shore or rest near a lighthouse with his wife Doris.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four children: Pamela Rutherford (her husband Joe) of La Quinta, CA, Lynn Quillen of Charlestown, RI, Janice Hassel (her husband Don) of Westerly, RI, Gail Oltedale (her husband Mark) of North Kingstown, RI; five grandchildren: Jason Quillen, Tami Johnson, Kristen Johnson, Brian Johnson, Justin Oltedale; five great-grandchildren, Jakob, Kaili, Mikayla, Bella & Aubree. Eleven nieces and nephews: Janet Picard of Coventry, RI, David Pierce, of CT, Doris Graska, William Albro and Donna Young of Inverness, FL, Priscilla Fabbri of Cranston, RI, Linda Dawley, VA, Jimmy Garceau, Mike Morin, Patty Boyd, of CA, and Michele LePage of GA. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by three sisters: Doris Perry, Gertrude Albro, Mildred Loveless, and nephew Richard Albro.

The funeral will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 5 at St. .Peter's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, 72 Central Street, Narragansett, RI followed with full military honors at the church. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter by the Sea or to the charity of choice.
