Waffen SS Gruppenführer, General der Infantry, Commander der XXXXIV Corps. He joined the Army 1n 1897 as a Fahnenjunker in the Prussian army, 2nd Westfälisches Infanterie-Regiment “Prinz Friedrich der Niederlande” Nr. 15. After WWI, he retired and joined the Stahlhelm in 1931, the NSDAP in 1934, and the SS in 1937. During WWII he commanded the 254th Infantry Division and XXXXIV Corps, fighting in the Battle of France, Dunkirk, Operation Barbarossa, Battle of Uman and the Battle of Kiev. His awards were: Iron Cross (1914 & 1939) 1st & 2nd Class; Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords; Hanseatic Cross of Hamburg; Hanseatic Cross of Bremen; Honor Cross of the World War 1914/1918; and Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
