Louise (Furna) Alves, 92, of Middletown passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 18, 2016 surrounded by her family at the Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, R.I.

Born on June 29, 1923 in St. Miguel, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Maciel) Furna. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph T. Alves.

Louise was a very compassionate lady to everyone. She loved taking care of her family and friends. Everyone who came to her home had to sit and eat her Portuguese food. She loved and prayed her rosary every day. She enjoyed sewing and gardening. For many years she worked at Newport Hospital. After retiring, she traveled to her native land, St. Miguel, to visit her family and enjoy many Portuguese feasts.

She was the devoted mother of, Joseph Alves of Middletown, Louis Alves of Newport, Connie Caetano and her husband Henrique of Middletown, and Maryann Maghuyop of Middletown. Louise was the adored Vavo of John Caetano, Cindy Medeiros, Henry Caetano, Christina Alves, Louis Mateos, Teddy Maghuyop, Joseph Maghuyop, Austin Alves and Andrew Alves as well as thirteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Louise was the mother-in-law of the late Amy Alves, also her brothers Louis Furna, Jaime Furna, Manuel Furna, Arthur Furna, Denis Furna, Jacinto Furna and her sister Maria Furna.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 22, 2016, from 4-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at 8am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.

Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown, RI.
