Joe Wendell Ray was born on September 13, 1935 in Tennessee, the son of Lytle Gurtha Ray (1909–1996) and Clara Viola (Hutchison) Ray (1908–1993).

He graduated from Isaac Litton High school in 1954. He also attended Belmont University where he played on the baseball and basketball teams. And, later he attended Middle Tennessee State University.

Joe was married about 1958 to Jacqueline "Jackie" Wright, and he worked for Ford Glass Plant, from which he later retired. He greatly enjoyed sports, antiques, traveling with his wife and spending time with his family.

A resident of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, Joe was 80 years old when he passed away on February 19, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Jere Ray, while survivors included his widow, two sons and a daughter-in-law, two grandsons and a number of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral Services were held at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
