Lorraine Woodruff Newman was born in Queens Village, New York in 1920 and is a 1938 graduate of Asbury Park High School where she helped create the first APHS Glee Club. She was well known for her exquisite soprano voice and was a student of the opera. In 1939, she represented the city of Asbury Park, N.J. at the New York World's Fair. She was a featured soprano soloist in numerous operas and performed throughout New York City .

After marrying Philip Newman, Esq. in 1940, Lorraine devoted herself to her family and sang locally for the remainder of her life at several houses of worship including the First Methodist Church, where she led the Children's Choir, and Temple Beth El, both in Asbury Park. While residing in Asbury Park from 1935 to 1958, Lorraine was actively involved as Council Woman and was responsible for implementing safety measures around Bond Street Grammar School where her two daughters attended. After moving to 48 Roosevelt Ave. Deal, N.J. in 1958, she continued her involvement in overseeing the beautification of the area and participating in the choirs at Temple Beth El, as well as at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Long Branch.

Lorraine has always been a most elegant, sophisticated lady whose devotion to her husband, daughters, and family was as deep as her love of classical music. Her G/d given voice brought much happiness to so many. She was blessed with the voice of an angel, inner and outer beauty, a love for animals, and a spirit of giving to those in need.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Philip Newman in 2006, her daughter, Pamela Newman Krosney in 2014 and her son-in-law, Dr. Neil Krosney in 2000.

Lorraine is survived by a daughter, Peggy Newman Vegosen; granddaughter, Hilary Krosney Rediker; granddaughter, Lana Vegosen Galati; grandson, Dr. Judson Krosney; 2 great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews as well. A very special thank you to her kind and loving caregivers, Irena and Tamara.
