The son of Jacob and Sarah (Glass) Burgess.

He married Welthea Glass, the daughter of Serjah and Hannah (Oldham), at Duxbury on Nov. 13, 1831. They were the parents of Jacob S., born in 1832, and Spencer, born in 1834.
