Alice Caroline Sommer

Alice Caroline Sommer, 98, of Ottumwa and formerly of Agency and Batavia, died Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Ottumwa.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia.Visitation will be begin (sic) at noon Tuesday, with the family present from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to Batavia Calvary Baptist Church or Batavia Community Center.

Mrs. Sommer was born July 21, 1916, the daughter of Henry and Edith Anderson Johansmeier. She married Donald Humble in June 1935. He died Jan. 2, 1954. She married Paul Sommer in 1967. He died in November 1977.She grew up in Jefferson County and attended Batavia High School, graduating with the Class of 1934.She and her first husband remained in the Batavia area. She was a homemaker and mother, but after her husband's death, she began working as a cook at the Batavia school.She and her second husband built a home in Agency, and she remained in Agency until the fall of 2014 when she moved to Prairie Hills Assisted Living.Mrs. Sommer was an avid supporter of her children and grandchildren in their activities. She enjoyed dancing and traveling to watch horse pulls.Alice spent almost ninety-nine years making the lives of her family and those around her better. She will be deeply missed.

Survivors include: three daughters, Marjorie Teninty and husband Don of Batavia, Patricia Fligg and husband Fred of Atkins, and Cheryl Vass and husband Reed of Eldon; three sons, Richard Humble and wife Denise of Pratt, Kansas, Larry Humble and wife Linda of Batavia, and Ellis Humble and wife Kathy of Agency; two stepdaughters, Marlys Smith of Batavia and Loretta Peebler of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 19 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by: her parents; one stepson, Delbert Sommer; one grandson; one great-grandson; two brothers, Edward and Ernie Johnsmeier; and three sisters, Evelyn Jeffrey, Minnie Jeffrey and Clara Horst.
