Robert Earl Sutherland, Sr., passed away peacefully at his home late Thursday, February 18, 2016. He was 69.

Born November 11, 1946 in Elyria, to Donald Sutherland and Nadene (Grimes) Sutherland. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1964 and attended The Ohio State University. Robert served in the U.S. Army for 3 years, in Germany.

He was a life-long resident of Huron County. Robert had a life-long passion for law enforcement. For 34 years he served as a Deputy for Huron County Sheriff's Office where he retired as Chief Deputy in 2009. He previously worked at Norwalk Parts, Clevite in Norwalk, Gould in Milan and Sutherland Seamless Gutter.

Robert was a former member of the North Fairfield Fire Department.

Robert will be especially remembered for being an OUTSTANDING FATHER and the neighborhood "handy man". His grandchildren were his pride and joy, he cherished them and they will forever cherish the memories they made together. Robert loved working with electricity.

His family includes 4 children, Scot (Lisa) Sutherland of Newark, Staci (Michael) Hamons of Greenwich, TJ (Edel) Todd of Bellevue and Robert E. "Boo" (Nichole) Sutherland of Bellevue; grandchildren, Nikki, Tiffany, Amber and Ryan Sutherland, Brookelyn, Kyrstin and Alex Hamons, Blake and Sophia Sutherland, Shaun, Debbie and Avah Todd; 2 great grandchildren; significant other, Charlotte Parsons Keeney; twin brother, Richard (Kitty) Sutherland of New London; brothers, Doug (Judie) Sutherland of Jeromesville, Rodney (Judi) Sutherland of New London, Terry (Mary) Sutherland of Findlay and Larry (Connie) Sutherland of Blissfield, MI and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to Robert's parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Debra and step mother, Edith Sutherland.

The Sutherland family will greet friends on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Eastman Funeral Home, New London. In keeping with Robert's wishes, he will be cremated.

Memorial contributions in Robert's name can be given to the donor's choice.
