John Wesley Christie in his 90th year, passed away peacefully at the United Mennonite Home on Monday, April 15th, 2013.
John was born March 6, 1924 to Jack and Della Christie in the Mooresburg General Store, where he grew up. John attended SS #11 school in Mooresburg where many happy afternoons were spent swimming in the river. Following his marriage to Wilma Kingston, John settled in St. Catharines. He was a proud WWII veteran serving in the Navy as a gunner on a merchant ship touring the South Pacific and a long-time member of the Chesley Legion. He and his beloved wife Wilma were blessed with 64 years of marriage and he missed her deeply after she passed away in December 2012.
John retired after 26 years of dedicated service from General Motors in St. Catharines. He enjoyed a full and happy life, being remembered for his love and commitment to his family and faith, his sense of humour, clever turn of phrase, warbling and wonderful singing voice.
John was predeceased by his parents, his sister Thelma and brothers, Orval and Leslie. Left to mourn are his son Bob (Natalie) of Freelton, his daughters, Barbara Gledhill (John) of Port Elgin, Sherry McOustra (Don) of Thorold, Susan Christie of St. Catharines, Sandra Dudar (Mike) of Beamsville, eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Jean Doiron (Leo) of Hamilton and Marie Christie of Tara, and brother-in-law Douglas Kingston (Nancy) of Paisley.
Visitation will be held at the Rhody Family Funeral Home, Chesley on Sunday, April 21st from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service on Monday, April 22nd at 11:00 a.m. There will be a Royal Canadian Legion Br. #144 service at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:45 p.m.
