He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joy Ellen, and four children and seven grandchildren; Lisa Ellen Flint Yarn and husband Douglas, and their children, Molly Greer and Charles; Paul Warren Flint and wife Laurie, and their daughter Carlyn; Christopher Greer Flint and wife Tara, and their daughters, Anna, Greer Ellen, and Marion; and Amy Flint Howard and husband John, and their son William.
After graduating from University of Michigan in 1950, General Flint enlisted in the Army when the Korean War broke out, graduating later from the Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. During his distinguished career he served as a company commander in the Korean War and a Battalion Commander in Viet Nam. He served in both the 25th Infantry Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a proud infantryman and had the distinct honor of wearing both U.S. and British paratrooper wings. For his service in combat he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross among many others.
He later served as professor of military history at the United States Military Academy, as chair of the history department, and finally as Dean of the Academic Board.
General Flint received a master's degree in history from the University of Alabama and a doctorate in history from Duke University. He attended the Army command and General Staff College, the British Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College and the Air War College.
He and his wife Joy moved to Valle Crucis after his retirement from military service. He taught history at Lees McRae College and was an active member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church.
Memorial services held at the Church of the Holy Cross in Valle Crucis, officiated by Father Allan McCaslin. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by the United States Army, at St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery.
