Tuskegee Airman. Wilson was the son of the late Wilson V. Eagleson Sr. and Frances Marshall Eagleson. He served for thirty years in the US Air Force until his retirement in 1972. He was in the first unit of black American fighter pilots who trained at Tuskegee, the black college founded by Booker T. Washington. The Tuskegee Airmen were a regiment of black pilots who flew in the Army Air Forces during World War II. They became known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The group trained to be fighter pilots for the 99th Fighter Squadron. They saw action in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. Lt.Eagleson's military career included not only World War II, but the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. During his career, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, three Presidential Unit Citations, the Red Star of Yugoslavia, the Korean Service Medal, the Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals, as well as numerous other awards and decorations. He is survived by his ex-wife, Geraldine R. Thornton; two sons, Wilson V. Eagleson III and wife, Brenda, of Durham, NC; and Gerald B. Eagleson and wife, Marylyn, of Dudley, NC; two daughters, Diedra A. Coney and husband, Ronald C. Alexander Sr. of Durham, NC and Helen F. Eagleson of the home; 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Rosalind E. Exum of Hampton, Va.; two foster children, Arthur and Teresita Washington of Dudley, NC.
