MATTOON -- Jo Ann (Lemmons) Henderson, age 86, formerly of Mattoon passed away on February 10, 2016 in Indianapolis, IN. A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Schilling Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Jo Ann was born on April 18, 1929 in Benton, IL the daughter of Hugh and Clara Lemmons. She married Obed Henderson on November 26, 1947. He preceded her in death on December 27, 2002.

Survivors include her sister, Sue Fehrenbaker and her husband Ken of Ypsilanti, MI; sons, Hugh and his wife Jane of Jacksonville, IL, Craig and his wife Mary of Indianapolis, IN, Mark and his wife Merrie of Mattoon, IL, Jon and his wife Julie of Wexford, PA; and daughter, Jo Ellen Buffie and her husband Bill of Indianapolis, IN.

She was ready at a moment’s notice to visit and care for her 14 grandchildren, opening her heart to their spouses and twelve great grandchildren. Family truly was the joy of her life.

Jo Ann and Obed raised their five children in Mattoon, IL. As a devoted wife and homemaker, when her youngest was in kindergarten, she became a Welcome Wagon Hostess and a part-time radio host-most fondly remembered as “Aunt Jo Ann with Letters to Santa.” She was committed to volunteering her time, talents and treasures to helping her community grow and prosper and, with Obed, left legacies honoring education through student scholarships at Lakeland College and Eastern Illinois University. Her proudest accomplishment was her 55-year marriage to Obed and setting an example for her children of what marriage should be. She celebrated with her family as their children married, had children and grandchildren of their own, with family visits as her top priority. Jo Ann will be lovingly remembered for her caring nature and devotion to her family and dear friends who became family.

Jo Ann’s family is forever grateful for the caring staff at The Hearth At Stones Crossing and Greenwood Meadows in Greenwood, IN as well as Franciscan St. Francis Hospice, Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her honor are suggested to the Mattoon Public Library.
