Barbara, an Orland native, was the youngest child of Claude and Lucy Martin. She married Ray Ayers, a classmate from Orland High School, and moved to Montana, followed by Wyoming.
Widowed in her 30s and again in her 60s, Barbara also experienced the loss of her parents, her son Kenny, and her siblings: Keith and Marvin Martin, Ina James and Verla Retzloff. In spite of the challenges, Barbara managed to hold on to her sunny nature and contagious laugh.
Her empathy and compassion drew her to caretaking, and she worked for several years at assisted living facilities in Port Angeles, WA and in Orland. She also cared for her ailing mother, helped Verla in her last years and nursed her husband Monty Colvin.
Singing and socializing were among Barbara's favorite pastimes, and she accomplished both by singing in the church choir and choral groups.
She will be greatly missed by her children, Bonnie (Peter), Kevin (Karen) and Jeff. Barbara was also a loving grandmother to Anika and Tai, Miranda, Camelia, Sarah and Andy, and great-grandmother to Aleah and RaeLynn. She also had a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews, and an extra closeness to Trish and Jerry.
A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at the Orland Lutheran Church, 19 Colusa Street at 11 a.m. on Sat., March 5. Casual dress, especially bright colors and florals, is encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Butte Home Health & Hospice.
