son of George W., born Charleston, Vt June 11 1848; resided in Waterford, Vt when he enlisted for three years in the Civil War on Dec 14 1863 at the age of 18; he received $300 town bounty money; mustered into Co. I, 3rd Vt Inf Dec 19 1863 as a private.
After firing two shots at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 05 1864, he was hit in the forearm by a minnie ball, which broke one of the bones. Retired to Frederickburg then Washington and in about 2 weeks furloughed home for about 4 weeks.
Then returned to Washington and rejoined his unit under Gen. Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley. At Petersburg, he was struck by a spent ball which lamed his knee.
He was mustered out July 11 1865 and received a pension of $4 per month.
