OBITUARY: Ronnie E. Hawkins Sr., 60, of Sturgis, died Feb. 16, 2016, at his home, after losing his battle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 9, 1955, in Sturgis, a son of Junior and Marjorie (Westphal) Hawkins. He graduated from Constantine High School and served in the Army National Guard from 1974 to 1982.
On Nov. 29, 1986, Ronnie married Valerie Ann Rustad in Elkhart, Ind. He worked as a forklift operator at Genesis Products and formerly as a truck driver at Four Seasons and Syndicate Systems. Ronnie enjoyed woodworking, fishing and NASCAR.
Surviving are his wife, Valerie Hawkins of Sturgis; father Junior Hawkins of Three Rivers; daughters Debbie (Gary) Lee of Auburn, Ind., and Tracy (Martin) Valerio of Sturgis; son Ronnie (Lisa) Hawkins Jr of Three Rivers; grandchildren Michael, Nicholas, Monica, Jordan and Devin; three great-grandchildren; sister Marjorie Hayes of Burr Oak; and a brother, Robert Hawkins of Sturgis. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Firm Foundation Ministries in Centreville, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Interment of Ashes will be in Peek Cemetery in Constantine. Pastor Don Smith will officiate.

Ron also took a keen interest in his family tree and collaborated with two other authors on a book, “The Family of Zadock Hawkins,” which was published in 2005 and is in the genealogy and local history sections of many libraries including the Library of Congress.

As noted in the obituary above, Ron predeceased his father. Ron’s grandparents, Claude Homer Hawkins and Erna A. (Koehl) Hawkins were buried in Peek Cemetery.
